Not your typical running retreat
This retreat takes place in the altiplano region of Bolivia, surrounding the enigmatic city of La Paz. Filled with incredible gastronomical experiences, spiritual and wellness activities, ancestral rituals, relaxation periods, local activities and running journeys in Bolivia’s most iconic and breathtaking landscapes, this experience is specially designed to take you deep into the country’s culture and allow you to explore its vast and varied landscapes, from coca fields in the jungle to jagged ice-capped Andean peaks, while doing what we all enjoy most: running.
The city of La Paz will serve as our base during this experience. Here we will enjoy some of the region’s top cultural and gastronomical offerings. The infamous Death Road will take us down towards the beginning of the Amazonian jungles and into the historic town of Coroico where we will relax and enjoy its unique cultural scene and impressive views. We will adventure through the gigantic and otherworldly rock formations of Valle de las Animas at sunrise and dive into some of the nation’s most well preserved indigenous groups and traditions and mystical sceneries on the Isla del Sol, in Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Huayna Potosí will take our breath away as we run at 16,141.73 ft. (a.s.l.), taking in all of its beautiful wildlife and snow capped peaks and glaciers.
Each day will be accompanied by yoga and meditation sessions led by our top yoga and meditation instructors, who will take us on a spiritual journey of inner peace and self-knowledge throughout and beyond the adventure.
BOLIVIA’S CULTURAL HERITAGE
Unique in its natural beauty, mountainous, complex and slightly chaotic, Bolivia is one of Latin America’s most diverse and captivating nations. Many of the indigenous languages and ways of life have been preserved throughout the decades as native people represent such a large chunk of Bolivia’s population. With 62% of its people identifying themselves within an indigenous group, Bolivia has the largest proportion of indigenous people in Latin America. The Quechua and Aymara groups make up the great majority of the population in the northern parts of the Altiplano, and in the higher valleys and basins of the Andes. Ancestral practices and customs are also reflected in the country’s popular culture. Although Spanish tends to predominate in urban areas, more than half of the population speaks an indigenous language as their mother tongue. Community festivals, which continue to play a significant role in rural cultural life, are also very much alive in the cities with larger native groups..
You will notice the intense and colorful display of folklore and tradition that is expressed in the everyday lives the local Bolivians, with whom we will be able to connect and interact closely. The idea is that we all spend a few days sharing and learning from this unique way of life that has evolved in a fascinating way over the centuries, always with an eye of respect for how they interact with life, their traditions, gastronomy, religious beliefs and their vision of the world.
All of our trips are designed to welcome hikers and runners of all fitness levels. We will assign different guides to groups of different levels so that no one is left behind. You will feel safe and comfortable throughout the trip whether you're a professional runner that wants to add these runs to your training, an amateur who wants to explore the world of trail-running or a casual hiker who wishes to challenge him- or herself while enjoying nature in a secure environment.
Please note that the altitude of the Altiplano region where the trip will take place is at or above 12,000 feet. At this altitude, the air is much thinner compared to sea level, and will cause shortness of breath and tiredness quickly. Luckily, our longest runs are descents, which makes it easier, but the altitude amplifies the required effort. Believe us, the views, landscapes and experience are well worth the hard work that your lungs will go through.
Our 7 day trip will kick off with some urban adventure through the streets and back-door trails of La Paz, some of which will lead us through surprising corners the city’s unique geography. La Paz will serve as our home base, and you will discover its combination of extraordinary and chaotic. The capital buzzes with life at the bottom of a small canyon, resting at 3,650 meters (11,975 ft) above sea level, on the high Andean plain known as the Altiplano. The city is very close to Lake Titicaca and is surrounded by the towering white mountains of the Cordillera Real.
On the following day we drive to El Valle de las Ánimas where we will have an 11 km run through one of the most surreal landscapes Bolivia has to offer. Las Animas is a series of geological formations highly eroded by the wind and rain that resemble a lunar terrain with hundreds of pointed lookouts that resemble petrified forests.
On the final day we’ll make our way to Huayna Potosí, a glorious mountain and National Park located about 30 km north of La Paz. The Andean peak reaches 6,088 meters above sea level. Here we will enjoy a 10 km run through snow covered trails, surrounded by a beautiful and surreal landscape of old abandoned tin mines, alpine lagoons and glaciers, and groups of llamas and alpacas wandering calmly nearby. We will finish this route with a comforting and warm meal at El Refugio, close to the mountain’s base camp.
On each of these days, we will provide daily yoga and meditation sessions designed especially to guide you on a path of physical and mental well-being.
From La Paz, we will leave for lower lands, to the Yungas Region, where the landscape changes into thick jungles. On the way there, we will go through a high mountain pass called La Cumbre (4,700 m / 15,400 ft), where a most privileged view of the Bolivian Andes (including Huayna Potosí) can be enjoyed, along with the vast valley below them that will take us to the Camino de la Muerte (Death Road). This is a narrow, winding pathway carved into the side of the mountains, which we will run through for 16 km going downhill, defying its infamous reputation as “The World’s Most Dangerous Road”, all the way to the town of Coroico, where we will relax and enjoy the views and gastronomy.
The next day will take us to Copacabana, a port town on the shores of Lake Titicaca, from where we will be ferried into the lake to Isla del Sol. Lake Titicaca is, at 3,800 meters (12,500 ft), the highest navigable lake in the world and has been an epicenter of legend and one of the most sacred sites since the time of the Incas, who saw it as the origin of the sun, the moon, the stars and humankind. Isla del Sol preserves much of these views of the world, and there we will take part in an ancestral ritual of medicinal plants and coca leaves, which have been so central to life in the Altiplano for centuries.
COMMUNITY & HUMAN CONNECTION
Our trips are made for you to get away from your daily routine and step out of your comfort zone in order to reconnect spiritually with your inner self while making new friends in a community of like minded people. We invite adventurers from all over the world and from all different backgrounds. This will give you the opportunity to bond and enjoy the company of others, to expand your network and connect with people in an open, friendly and conscious environment.
Ali Pacha offers local gastronomy based on plant products and their aim is to become a benchmark for haute cuisine in the city of La Paz.
With their careers in national and international cuisines and a strong sense of responsibility towards the natural and social environments, Ali Pacha focuses on strengthening the link between the chef and their guests’ product awareness. They like to encourage them to understand that food is part of an extensive chain that involves a large number of people who make significant contributions to our planet’s sustainability and eventually impact our lives when we consume their products.
Their concept is to provide a unique dining experience, showcasing products that are not yet used to their full capacity, and taking advantage of Bolivia’s abundant varieties of plants. They aim to create a balance between the nature of the product and its versatility. In addition, they provide the country with jobs, and work in parallel with micro-producers to display the wealth of Bolivia’s natural products.
Ali Pacha will host a very special farewell dinner for us.
SPIRITUALITY, WELLNESS & ANCESTRAL MEDICINE
We believe in recognizing ancestral wisdom and spirituality as a source of valuable knowledge and good living, as well as in the constant practice of physical activity as a way to reconnect to our bodies and to our higher selves.
Taking advantage of Bolivia's millenary traditions of ancestral medicine, you will be invited to take part in traditional ritual on Isla del Sol, that will deepen your bond with the earth and promote the awakening of your ancestral memory.
Our guides, local medicine men and spiritual teachers will make sure that this life changing experience transcends running, allowing us to dive deeply into the region's history and set out on a journey of awareness and self discovery.

TAKE A SNEAK PEEK OF
OUR EXPERIENCES HERE.
"Everything about the Aire Libre experience deeply impacted me. Meeting a joyous group of people that became friends, and bonding with them while working towards a common goal made the entire experience incredibly rewarding. Outside the amazing people involved, I didn’t expect to have such a strong connection with the trail. It was nothing like I expected. No music, no city noise, no distraction, just focus between you and the trail. Enabling a very zen-like experience, where you receive so much clarity and removal from the daily stresses of life. Aire Libre left such an indescribable impact on me. It’s something I’ll cherish forever and eagerly await for the next one to take place."

WHAT IF I’M NOT PHYSICALLY FIT ENOUGH FOR THIS EXPERIENCE?
It is very important to emphasize here that these experiences aren’t races or competitions, but rather opportunities to get away from the noise of urban life and to connect with oneself in nature. That being said, worry not, because the minimum required level of fitness is to be able to walk well, both uphill and downhill. We usually divide into sub-groups according to the level of fitness and each group is assigned a local guide who is very familiar with the route. Furthermore, there will always be a guide who stays behind the last participant of the last group, so that we make sure no one is left behind.
WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER RUN TRAIL BEFORE?
The Aire Libre Team, as well as most of our local guides, have extensive experience running trail, so there will be many opportunities to share relevant information and knowledge. In fact, if this is your first time, we are genuinely thrilled for you, because a truly amazing world of memorable landscapes and deep discovery is waiting for you. Moreover, the pace of our journeys is usually easy and includes frequent rest stops, so you can take your time in getting acquainted with the local terrain.
The content of our travel experiences is geared towards spreading the word and generating awareness about ways to improve your overall wellbeing while living in harmony with nature. It is very important for us at Aire Libre to create consciousness about keeping our planet safe and clean. Our retreats and getaways are created in an environment where conscious consumption, waste management, good nutrition and prosperity are of utmost importance.
Please keep our trails clean (;
