Not your typical running retreat.

The journey will begin at San Cristóbal de las Casas, the cultural and historical epicenter of the mystical and remote region of Los Altos de Chiapas (Central Highlands). Dubbed “The most magical of mexican towns” by a former president, San Cristobal features beautiful colonial architecture and old cobblestone streets that have been preserved since the times of Spanish rule. The subtle scent of the region’s coffee in the air and the bright colors from the crafts and textiles from the local Tzotzil population, make this a very special and unique town.

During our time in San Cristobal we will explore the surrounding area, where we will visit an extinct volcano, the enigmatic town of San Juan Chamula, the textile community of Zinacantán and the region’s world renowned coffee region, where we will be able to hang out with the farmers as we enjoy one of Mexico’s most sought after cups of coffee.

Later during the trip we will spend 2 nights at Lagos de Montebello, where we will run on a series of trails with stunning views of Guatemala and the region’s lake system. The run will finish at the Tenam Puente Archeological site, a series of ruins that date back to the Mayan empire.

Our guides, local medicine men and spiritual teachers will make sure that this life changing experience transcends running, allowing us to dive deeply into the region's history and set out on a journey of awareness and self discovery.

CULTURAL EXPERIENCE.

For decades, the state of Chiapas has caused worldwide fascination due to the preservation of its indigenous cultures, its coffee, natural landscapes and untouched archeological sites.
San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán are two notable examples of the region’s indigenous heritage. Here, indigenous cultures have managed to survive, keeping many of their traditions untouched and their unique lifestyles alive. While Zinacantán is renowned for its millenary textile traditions, the church in San Juan Chamula is considered by many the most mystical church on earth, where worshipers engage in rituals that involve a mix of Catholic beliefs with indigenous traditions such as copal burning, spiritual cleanses, animal sacrifice and Tzotzil chanting.
During our runs, we will explore these two towns and visit the houses and studios of its top craftsmen. We will also visit our friends Antolina and Sebastiana who will prepare a local meal for us in one of the mountain communities surrounding San Juan Chamula.

Due to its location and vitamin rich soils, Chiapas is Mexico’s top coffee producer, cultivating over 50% of the countries coffee and some of the very best and highest-grown in the continent.
During the retreat you will be able to visit an authentic Finca de Café operated by our friends at Cafeólogo in collaboration with local farmers. Here you will witness the production process, connect with the farmers during lunch at the finca and enjoy some of the very best coffee in the world.

We will also visit Lagunas de Montebello, a National Park in the southernmost part of Mexico, that is made up of 59 multi-colored lakes spread over 15,840 acres of pines and tropical forest. Here we will visit the border with Guatemala, and enjoy breathtaking views and local cuisine before finishing the trip on top of an ancient pyramid at the Tenam Puente Archeological Site.

* January is the month of the traditional Fiesta de San Sebastián, a local patron Saint. This retreat is a unique opportunity to witness the traditional festivities that take place in the communities during these dates.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The start of the journey will take us to the mystical and somewhat remote mountainous region of Los Altos (Central Highlands). San Cristóbal de las Casas, will serve as our base during the first 3 days of the retreat.

The first day of the retreat we will run 15km, from San Cristobal to San Juan Chamula, where we will visit the Church before heading to the finish line in the textile town of Zinacantan. Here we will visit the local craftspeople and have a community gathering with traditional food at the house of and indigenous family.

The following day we will run 18 kilometers from the hotel to the top of the Tzontehuitz, an extinct volcano that is next to Tenejapa where we will join the local coffee producers for a meal and coffee tasting.

On the third day we will do an easy 8 km through the old colonial streets of San Cristóbal, before leaving on a road trip to Tziscao, a community located next to the border with Guatemala, in the Montebello Lakes National Park. Here we will run 16km through a series of trails in a misty forest that is filled with seemingly endless lakes.

Our final day will consist of a 10km run which will end in an experience of ancient Mayan times: on top of a centuries old pyramid in the Tenam Puente Archeological Site.

Average distance is 10 to 15 kilometers per day, with stops to rest and eat.

We will provide transportation and logistics to keep your belongings safe, so that you can disconnect and enjoy the adventure.

COMMUNITY TESTIMONIALS

"Everything about the Aire Libre experience deeply impacted me. Meeting a joyous group of people that became friends, and bonding with them while working towards a common goal made the entire experience incredibly rewarding. Outside the amazing people involved, I didn’t expect to have such a strong connection with the trail. It was nothing like I expected. No music, no city noise, no distraction, just focus between you and the trail. Enabling a very zen-like experience, where you receive so much clarity and removal from the daily stresses of life. Aire Libre left such an indescribable impact on me. It’s something I’ll cherish forever and eagerly await for the next one to take place."

FAQ

WHAT IF I’M NOT PHYSICALLY FIT ENOUGH FOR THIS EXPERIENCE?

It is very important to emphasize here that these experiences aren’t races or competitions, but rather opportunities to get away from the noise of urban life and to connect with oneself in nature. That being said, worry not, because the minimum required level of fitness is to be able to walk well, both uphill and downhill. We usually divide into sub-groups according to the level of fitness and each group is assigned a local guide who is very familiar with the route. Furthermore, there will always be a guide who stays behind the last participant of the last group, so that we make sure no one is left behind.

WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER RUN TRAIL BEFORE?

The Aire Libre Team, as well as most of our local guides, have extensive experience running trail, so there will be many opportunities to share relevant information and knowledge. In fact, if this is your first time, we are genuinely thrilled for you, because a truly amazing world of memorable landscapes and deep discovery is waiting for you. Moreover, the pace of our journeys is usually easy and includes frequent rest stops, so you can take your time in getting acquainted with the local terrain.
