ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE / ROUTE DESCRIPTION
The Mexico City experience is one of our most lively and dynamic adventures. In this trip we will enjoy the beautiful chaos of the metropolis, as well as the breathtaking landscapes that surround it.
We will visit one of Mexico City's most representative locations, Xochimilco: the last remnant canals of a very efficient water transport and agricultural system built by the Aztecs during the Great Tenochtitlán times. The chinampas (floating gardens) have been the traditional method of cultivation since pre-Hispanic times and continue to be an example of sustainability and productivity. We will be joining Yolcan (a network of local agriculturists) for a one of a kind gastronomic experience that will submerge us in this centennial practice.
Later into the night, after relaxing for the afternoon, we will have a one-of-a-kind beer run, where we will visit a series of traditional cantinas, ending up at the famous Salón Covadonga for dinner.
Afterwards, we will head out to the magical colonial town of Valle de Bravo located in the State of Mexico. It is located at the shore of Lake Avándaro, approximately 156 km southwest of Mexico City.
Here, we will start our day with a relaxing yoga and meditation session at the Great Stupa for Global Peace; the largest and most ancient stupa in the western world. The 36 meter tall building is immersed in a beautiful forest landscape that seems to try to hide it in some mystical manner, keeping it peaceful and hermetic. Later, we will cross the deep forest for a 13 km trail run into the heart of the town.
Once back in Mexico City, we will enjoy more of the capitals gastronomical delights for a farewell Dinner.
On the last day of the trip, we will head out on a 10 km sightseeing run, where we will make our way through the Chapultepec forest, better known as the lungs of the city, and all the way to the Historic Center. This histroic route will take us past by the city's most iconic landmarks and cultural venues.
We will provide daily yoga and meditation sessions designed especially to guide you on a path of physical and mental well-being.
On the next day we will head out to the Xinantecatl Volcano, the 4th highest peak in Mexico. Located about 80 km (50 mi) west of Mexico City. There, we will have the chance to run a 16 km route into the beautiful extinct crater.
The Nahuatl name of the mountain, Xinantecatl, means “The Naked Lord” or “Lord of the Corn Stalks.” Ancient Nahuatl myths often told tales about Mexico´s mountains and volcanos. One story narrates how Xinantecatl, a well known Aztec warrior, was in love with Itzaccihuatl, Popo’s wife. In anger, both warriors started to fight and throw stones at each other. Finally, Popo threw a large chunk of ice and ended up decapitating Xinantecatl which explains the volcano’s flat top.
SPIRITUALITY, WELLNESS & ANCESTRAL MEDICINE
We believe in recognizing ancestral wisdom and spirituality as a source of valuable knowledge and good living, as well as in the constant practice of physical activity as a way to reconnect to our bodies and to our higher selves.
Taking advantage of Mexico's millenary traditions of ancestral medicine, you will be invited to take part in sweat lodge and cleansing rituals that will purify your body, deepen your bond with the earth and promote the awakening of your ancestral memory.
We will visit Stupa de La Paz, the only stupa in Mexico and the largest one in the West, where we will take part of a unique meditation and yoga session.
Our guides, local medicine men and spiritual teachers will make sure that this life changing experience transcends running, allowing us to dive deeply into the region's history and set out on a journey of awareness and self discovery.
Our trips are designed to welcome hikers and runners of all fitness levels.
We will assign different guides to groups of different levels so that no one is left behind. You will feel safe and comfortable throughout the trip whether you're a professional runner that wants to add these runs to your training, an amateur who wants to explore the world of trail-running or a casual hiker who wishes to challenge him- or herself while enjoying nature in a secure environment.
Yolcan is a non-profit agricultural project founded by Lucio Usobiaga and Antonio Murad in 2011. Their objective is to save Xochimilco’s chinampa system by becoming a platform for small producers to find a direct sales channel at a fairer price and to make those products more accessible for the consumer, for those who want to eat healthier, change habits, consume local produce, and regenerate finances.
The word “Yolcan” is Nahuatl for “land of origin,” and that’s exactly what Usobiaga and Murad are trying to do: They want to return Xochimilco’s chinampas to the traditional system of organic and sustainable permaculture made possible by the unique ecosystem. To show off the potential of the chinampas, Yolcan has focused on offering high-quality greens used by the most renowned chefs at Mexico City’s top restaurants like Enrique Olvera, Eduardo “Lalo” Garcia, and Gabriela Cámara — mean that Yolcan provides produce for Pujol, Máximo Bistrot, and Contramar, among others.
What started as a project to rehabilitate the agricultural area in the south of the city, became a business model that seeks to benefit small producers and consumers, by facilitating access to fruits and vegetables of agro-ecological origin and at the same time training farmers who had abandoned this practice due to the geological conditions.

WHAT IF I’M NOT PHYSICALLY FIT ENOUGH FOR THIS EXPERIENCE?
It is very important to emphasize here that these experiences aren’t races or competitions, but rather opportunities to get away from the noise of urban life and to connect with oneself in nature. That being said, worry not, because the minimum required level of fitness is to be able to walk well, both uphill and downhill. We usually divide into sub-groups according to the level of fitness and each group is assigned a local guide who is very familiar with the route. Furthermore, there will always be a guide who stays behind the last participant of the last group, so that we make sure no one is left behind.
WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER RUN TRAIL BEFORE?
The Aire Libre Team, as well as most of our local guides, have extensive experience running trail, so there will be many opportunities to share relevant information and knowledge. In fact, if this is your first time, we are genuinely thrilled for you, because a truly amazing world of memorable landscapes and deep discovery is waiting for you. Moreover, the pace of our journeys is usually easy and includes frequent rest stops, so you can take your time in getting acquainted with the local terrain.
